The brief

What we built.

A concept rebuild for a roadhouse and saloon known for award-winning ribs and live karaoke. Their old site took 31 seconds to show its main content on a phone. A concept we built unprompted, to show what the site could be; not affiliated with the business.

  • A night drive down Pine Island Road toward a glowing neon roadhouse sign, with road signs as headings
  • Menu, catering, specials and live entertainment, plus the story of a building made from reclaimed warehouse lumber
  • Their Google reviews linked from the page
  • 15 pages with search markup. Google mobile speed 53 to 98

The business

Who we were dealing with.

A roadhouse restaurant and saloon in Cape Coral serving steaks, BBQ ribs, burgers, chicken and salmon, with live entertainment and a full catering service.

TownCape Coral, FL
CustomersLocal diners, bar and live-music crowds, and catering clients for weddings, corporate and holiday events across Lee County.

Their brand as it was

  • Tagline: Cold Beer, Great Food and Peanut Shells on the floor
  • Red roadhouse buttons on the old site
  • Rustic, recycled-lumber roadhouse character

Worth knowing

  • Described as a 90% recycled restaurant: walls and horseshoe bar from reclaimed old Fort Myers warehouse lumber and brick
  • License plates from all 50 states and a beer can collection from old American breweries
  • Mounted wildlife and a Peterbilt big rig sometimes seen in the lot
  • Catering on-time guarantee: if late, you don't pay
  • Claims award-winning BBQ ribs (award not named)
  • A directory suggests over 30 years in business, but their own site does not say

The research

How we studied the industry, top to bottom.

Why this business

  • Picked from 18 scouted Cape Coral restaurants as episode 13
  • Local Lighthouse performance 28 with a 12 to 14 s main-content load
  • A one-of-a-kind building story the old site did not show
  • Phone first screen was three giant red buttons with no food, address or call button

The industry

  • Restaurant visitors on phones want food, address, hours and a one-tap call or order
  • Menus and daily specials drive visits, and live-music nights bring regulars
  • Catering clients look for reliability, so a delivery guarantee is a strong first-screen message

The local market

  • Located on Pine Island Road, next to the German American Social Club and just east of Burnt Store Road
  • Catering covers Lee County and Southwest Florida
  • Competed with 18 other audited Cape Coral restaurants, most of which also scored poorly on mobile
  • Scouting table of Cape Coral restaurants (_scout-restaurants/candidates.md)

What we found

  • No food, address, hours or call button on the first phone screen
  • Only one tap-to-call link, far down the page
  • The restaurant's story and catering guarantee were buried

The audit

What was holding it back.

Tested 2026-10-26

  • PageSpeed: main content loaded in 31.4 s
  • Local run: main content 14.4 s, first paint 4.8 s, blocking time 2,330 ms
  • Local run: page weight 6.3 MB
  1. First phone screen was a logo and three giant red buttons (Catering, Order Online, Join) with no food, address or call button
  2. Only one tap-to-call link on the homepage, far down
  3. The homepage H1 was just 'HOME'
  4. No meta description
  5. 11 of 14 images had no alt text
  6. No Restaurant schema
  7. 6.3 MB page
  8. Built on an ordering-site WordPress theme
  9. Menu was hard to reach on a phone

Brand & design

Last Stop on Pine Island Road direction.

A night drive: the page opens at dusk, over the hood of a Peterbilt, heading toward a glowing neon roadhouse sign, then settles into warm cream menu paper, a reclaimed-lumber story and a night-arrival finale. It captures the roadhouse and big-rig character the old site hid.

  • Dusk purple#2B2140
  • Neon red#FF3B30
  • Neon amber#FFB23E
  • Asphalt#1E1E22
  • Cream#F4ECDD

Type

  • Alfa Slab One for the wordmark and slab headings
  • Anton for condensed display text
  • Caveat for handwritten accents
  • Inter for body text, all self-hosted

Signature moments

  • Slow dusk drive over a Peterbilt hood toward the neon sign
  • Neon flicker-on and glowing finale
  • Green highway sign carrying the address and 'next to the German American Social Club'
  • Vintage license plates flip in one by one in the story section
  • A yellow 'ON TIME OR YOU DON'T PAY' diamond sign that swings
  • Parallax on palms, neon sign and hood; all gated by reduced-motion

Imagery

  • Generated art (road scene, Peterbilt hood, neon sign, palms, plates, food, bar, stage and catering) with no text, faces or real beer logos
  • Food photos, bar interior, catering buffet and stage are AI stand-ins, to be swapped for real photos
  • Wordmark typeset in code, not their real logo

Five desktop directions were explored (reclaimed wood, editorial BBQ, license plate wall, night drive, horseshoe bar); the night drive scored 9/10 and was refined in v2 with the license plate wall and facts-only content.

Under the hood

How it is built.

Built to convert

  • Sticky bottom bar on phones with Call and Order online
  • Hero buttons: Order online, Call, Directions
  • Real menu pulled from their ordering widget with posted prices, plus filtered sub-pages for ribs, steaks, burgers, chicken and salmon
  • Swipeable menu cards on phones
  • Catering page with tap-to-call and the on-time guarantee
  • Specials, entertainment, gift shop, news, reviews, FAQ and visit pages
  • Reviews link out to Google; no stars or quotes shown

Built to rank

  • Restaurant-focused pages and menu sub-pages
  • No city pages because it is a single-location restaurant
  • OG share image with the name and a tagline set in code
  • Sitemap included; site hidden via noindex until the owner approves

Built to be fast

  • Phone-only 480w hero preloaded with high fetch priority
  • Non-looping hero animations and no large drop-shadow filters
  • 480w art on phones via small sizes
  • content-visibility:auto on below-fold sections
  • Self-hosted fonts with the main slab font preloaded
  • Animations are CSS transform and opacity only
