The brief

What we built.

A concept rebuild for a family Italian restaurant open since 1991. Google could not test their old site at all (a broken security certificate); the rebuild scores 100 across the board. A concept we built unprompted, to show what the site could be; not affiliated with the business.

  • A top-down family table with the menu in order: antipasti, pizza, stromboli and calzone, pasta and veal
  • The family story: Giovanni’s mother’s recipes across three cities
  • Reserve-by-phone and online takeout paths, with Call and Reserve always in reach
  • 15 pages with restaurant and menu markup. Google PageSpeed 100 in every category

Google Lighthouse, mobile, their site before and our concept after. Official Google PageSpeed (pagespeed.web.dev, mobile): it could not test the site. Local Lighthouse also refused to run on the https address. · Official Google PageSpeed (pagespeed.web.dev, mobile, 2026-10-26), recorded run 100 / 100 / 100 / 100 (an earlier run scored 98 performance). The business

Who we were dealing with.

A family-run pizzeria and Italian restaurant serving made-to-order pizza, pasta, veal and appetizers in Cape Coral, Florida.

TownCape Coral, FL
Open since1991
CustomersLocal families and seasonal visitors in Cape Coral; reservations are recommended in season.

Their brand as it was

  • Script 'Maria's' wordmark
  • Warm family-trattoria tone
  • Old GoDaddy site with a separate mobile page

Worth knowing

  • Founded in 1991 by a Naples-born pizzaiolo whose recipes follow his mother's
  • Everything is made to order, not pre-prepped or frozen
  • Uses real butter, heavy cream, Grande mozzarella, extra virgin olive oil and rice bran oil in the fryers
  • Phones turn on at 4pm; open Sun-Thu 4-9pm and Fri-Sat 4-9:30pm

The research

How we studied the industry, top to bottom.

Why this business

  • Picked from 18 scouted Cape Coral restaurants as episode 12
  • Secure address served the wrong certificate, so Google's own speed test could not run on it
  • 35-year family story with a clear founder history
  • Site stuck in 2013 with an empty daily specials page

The industry

  • Restaurant visitors on phones want the menu, hours, address and a one-tap way to call or order
  • Reservations matter in season; phones off until 4pm leaves lunch-time visitors with no way to book
  • Takeout ordering and daily specials are common reasons to visit a restaurant site

The local market

  • Cape Coral restaurant scene: 18 other local restaurants were audited for comparison
  • Most competitors scored 25 to 55 on mobile performance, with many using the same template pop-ups
  • Scouting table of Cape Coral restaurants (_scout-restaurants/candidates.md)

What we found

  • No online reservations; phone-only and only after 4pm
  • No tap-to-call on the first phone screen
  • No food photo, hours or address on the first screen
  • No Restaurant or menu schema
  • Daily specials page empty

The audit

What was holding it back.

Tested 2026-10-26

  • PageSpeed returned 'Unable to resolve' for the https address, so there is no before score
  • The http report came back empty
  1. The https address serves a certificate for a different company, so browsers show a privacy warning and Google's speed test cannot run
  2. Only the http version works, and Chrome labels it Not secure
  3. Copyright footer still says 2013
  4. A separate mobile page with a 'View Desktop Version' link from an old site builder
  5. No tap-to-call on the first phone screen
  6. No online reservations and phones are off until 4pm
  7. Daily specials page said 'returning soon'
  8. Order Online sends visitors to an off-site page
  9. First phone screen: logo and a paragraph, no food photo, hours or address
  10. No Restaurant or menu schema; thin pages

Brand & design

Sunday Dinner Table direction.

One long wooden family table, shot top-down, runs the full length of the page on warm linen. Dishes slide down the table toward you as you scroll, steam rises off the hero pizza and the founder's recipe card writes itself in, so the site feels like being passed a plate at a family dinner.

  • Warm cream#FAF6EE
  • Walnut wood#5A3A22
  • Tomato red#B3261E
  • Basil green#2F5233
  • Candle gold#E2B85C

Type

  • Playfair Display serif for headlines
  • Inter for body text
  • Yellowtail and a Homemade handwriting font for the recipe card, loaded only when it is near the viewport

Signature moments

  • Top-down family table runs down the home page
  • Dishes slide down the table on scroll (CSS scroll-driven, with an IntersectionObserver fallback)
  • Steam rises off the hero pizza
  • 'Sugo della Mamma' recipe card writes itself line by line
  • Napkin card shows 'Open tonight' and switches hours on Fri/Sat
  • Three framed vintage-style frames tell the Naples, New York, Cape Coral story

Imagery

  • Top-down food and table-prop photography generated through Codex as green-screen cut-outs, with no text, logos or faces
  • Three framed vintage-style pictures are AI illustrations, labelled as such on the story page
  • Wordmark rebuilt in code, not generated
  • Watercolor illustrated map, not a live map

Five desktop directions were explored (calm recipes, editorial magazine, guest check, Naples-to-Cape-Coral map, family table); the family table scored highest at 8.5/10 and was refined in v2 with the story frames and recipe card.

Under the hood

How it is built.

Built to convert

  • Sticky bottom bar on phones with Call and Reserve
  • Reservation 'place card' collecting party size, date and time, then a tap-to-call to read details out
  • Takeout buttons link to the real Toast ordering page
  • Full menu with real prices and fixed typos across category pages
  • Gluten-free page
  • Story page, FAQ and Visit page
  • Daily specials page that states specials are returning soon
  • Mobile stacks with a swipeable three-city story row and hamburger menu

Built to rank

  • Restaurant schema with servesCuisine, Menu with prices, opening hours, acceptsReservations and an OrderAction to Toast
  • FAQPage and BreadcrumbList schema
  • Category pages for pizza, Sicilian, stromboli and calzones, pasta and veal, antipasti, gluten-free, salads, subs and desserts
  • Sitemap and robots; site hidden via noindex until the owner approves

Built to be fast

  • Hero extras (glasses, candle, basket, oil, steam, napkin) load only after first interaction or 7 s so the hero pizza gets the bandwidth
  • content-visibility:auto on course sections
  • Handwriting font loads only when the recipe card is near
  • Hero pizza encoded lighter
  • Animations use transform and opacity only and are off for reduced motion
